Print a poster: paper and format

If you type "print a poster" into a search engine, you'll find a dozen printers promising a four-hour turnaround, single prints, and next-day delivery. This is convenient for a store promotion or a local concert poster. But for a poster you hang in your home and look at for years, the criteria change completely. Here's what really makes a difference, from paper to format, from the perspective of a company that prints its own posters.

Paperweight: the number that determines if the poster stands up

Paperweight is the weight of the paper in grams per square meter. To keep prices low, an express printer often goes down to 135 or 170 g. At this weight, the paper wrinkles as soon as it's framed and light shines through it slightly. Above 250 g, the poster has the feel of thick card, it stays flat in a frame, and blacks retain their density. At VintyArty, prints range from 250 to 350 g depending on the paper. The difference can be felt by hand even before it's seen on the wall.

Matte, semi-gloss, or fine art: the finish changes the look of a printed poster

Three families of paper coexist, and each serves a specific intention.

Matte paper

Matte absorbs light. No reflections, sharp flat colors, a finish close to a silkscreened poster. This is the right choice for a line illustration or a flat gouache, where you want the color to speak without distracting glare.

Premium semi-gloss

Semi-gloss enhances contrasts and brings out deep colors, without the gaudiness of photo paper. It works well for dense visuals: night skies, urban scenes, gouaches with strong gradients.

Fine art

Fine art is a thick, textured paper that gives an engraving-like texture. This is the gallery choice, for a piece treated as a work of art and not as a disposable decorative object.

From A4 to A0: what poster size to print depending on the wall

The format is chosen less for the poster itself and more for where it will go. An A4 or 30x40 cm can be placed on a shelf or grouped with others in a composition. An A3 or 50x70 cm naturally finds its place above a desk or a headboard. An A1, A0, or 70x100 cm becomes the focal point of an entire wall, in an entryway or living room. VintyArty offers eleven formats, from A4 to A0 and from 30x40 to 70x100 cm, so that the poster adapts to the room and not the other way around. A simple guide before ordering: the poster is approximately two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above.

Printing a poster in France: why location matters

Printing in France is not just a label on a tag. It shortens the chain between the validated file and the wall, and that's where color control comes into play. A gouache blue calibrated on screen and the same blue coming out of a press on the other side of the world are two different things. By keeping printing close to the workshop, we can review a proof, compare, and reject a print that has shifted. All VintyArty posters are printed in France for this reason.

Buy an already printed poster, or have one created for you

A useful clarification if you arrived here looking for a traditional printer: VintyArty does not print files you provide. The company publishes its own posters, through two channels.

The first is a catalog of original posters, already printed on art paper and ready to hang, in styles ranging from gouache in the spirit of old travel posters to contemporary line art. The BUSTĀN collection and the travel posters are two examples.

The second is a personalized travel poster: you choose the city and the text, the workshop composes the poster in the spirit of old railway posters, using gouache. Create your personalized travel poster. And you know what? Any city is possible.

In both cases, a wooden or black metal frame is optional, and a gift card is offered with each order.

Frequently asked questions about poster printing

What paper weight should I choose for printing a quality poster?

For a poster intended to last and be framed, aim for at least 250 gsm. Below that, the paper tends to buckle and loses its flatness in a frame. VintyArty prints between 250 and 350 gsm depending on the chosen paper.

What's the difference between matte paper and fine art paper for a poster?

Matte offers a non-reflective finish, suitable for flat illustrations and gouaches. Fine art is a thick, textured paper that gives an engraving-like texture, similar to a gallery print. The choice depends on the poster's style and the desired effect on the wall.

Can I have a personalized poster printed with my own city?

Yes. VintyArty creates personalized travel posters: you specify the city and text, and the workshop designs the poster in the style of old travel posters. The service involves creating the poster, not printing a file you prepared yourself. You choose the city, the text, and we create and print your poster.

What poster size should I choose for a living room wall?

For a living room wall, an A1, A0, or 70x100 cm poster acts as a centerpiece. A practical guide: the poster should be approximately two-thirds the width of the furniture it hangs above. For a gallery effect, several small grouped formats work just as well as a single large piece.

Are VintyArty posters printed in France?

Yes, all posters are printed in France on art paper ranging from 250 to 350 gsm. Local printing allows for color calibration and proof approval before shipping.
